Commissioners said the trial is intended to reduce recurring staff time demands and free staff bandwidth while retaining the ability to call special meetings and make exceptions for budget transparency.
Director Corso said projected direct savings were modest and would stem mainly from reduced SFGovTV services, estimating roughly $40,000–$50,000 annually that could be cut proportionally. Deputy City Attorney Sarah Fabian advised the commission that changing meeting frequency is permissible under the Sunshine Ordinance and Brown Act so long as public remote comment and notice provisions remain available and the commission amends its bylaws.
Members debated practical tradeoffs: some commissioners expressed concern about consolidating multiple department reports and losing evening meeting access for working members of the public; others said improved staff summaries and committees could preserve public access and allow deeper technical review outside the full commission. The commission adopted the amended rules and then approved a 2026 calendar reflecting the change.
What’s next: The commission secretary will publish the amended rules and calendar and prepare a six‑month evaluation report for the commission to review in mid‑2026; special meetings and budget hearings may be scheduled as needed.
