At the San Francisco Arts Commissions Nov. 3 meeting, Director of Cultural Affairs Ralph Remington outlined recent City activity and agency work to advance arts and cultural programs, including an ordinance approved by the Board of Supervisors Rules Committee that would require the Arts Commission to develop a certification process identifying artists who may be eligible for affordable housing programs.
Remington said that the rules committee unanimously approved an amendment to the administrative code that moves toward identifying artists eligible for affordable housing; he acknowledged the involvement of Board President Rafael Mandelmans office and noted Commissioner Marcus Shelbys advocacy. Remington described a $100,000,000 project that staff said would bring 90 affordable housing units for artists, including rehearsal and black box theater space, led by local partners including founding SF Jazz leadership and Mercy Housing.
In addition to housing work, Remington reviewed staff participation in national conferences, public‑art updates, and community convenings. He noted that the Arts Impact Endowment grant application deadline for the 2026 funding cycle is Nov. 13, 2025 at noon, reminded applicants of a new advanced payment and reimbursement policy for grants in FY26/27, and outlined outreach work including webinars and consultations.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about project locations and application deadlines; Commissioner Brenzel corrected a slide that listed a December grant deadline, noting the deadline is Nov. 13. Remington said further updates will be posted on the Arts Commission website and directed stakeholders to SFAC web resources for convening RSVP and grant guidance.
The director concluded by inviting commissioners to future convenings and noting the Arts Commissions role in implementing the shaping legacy project and public‑art policy work around monuments and memorials.
