SFMTA director highlights ParkMobile launch, Chinatown station art and Breda retirement

During the Nov. 4 SFMTA board meeting, Director Kirschbaum delivered the director’s report with several operational updates and staff recognitions.

Kirschbaum recognized Chief Safety Officer Melvin Henry, who will retire later in November after a 42‑year career in transportation. Henry recalled his long career and said he is “looking forward to retirement” while noting he will miss colleagues. The director credited Henry with leading development of the agency’s first public transportation agency safety plan and strengthening relationships with external regulators.

Kirschbaum announced that ParkMobile has launched in San Francisco and can now be used at SFMTA meter spaces; a second vendor, HotSpot, is expected to go live in early 2026. Staff said these apps complement cash and card payment options, allowing remote session extensions and reminders.

The report also noted the final public artwork installation at Chinatown Rose Pak Station will be completed later this month and highlighted an upcoming public farewell for the Breda light‑rail vehicles, which have been in service for more than 25 years; the board was told the last day for customers to ride the Breda trains will be Nov. 12 and the vehicles will appear on the J Church line during a scheduled fan event.

Board members acknowledged the work of parking and curb management staff and congratulated Hank Wilson on recognition from the Council of District Merchants Associations.

What’s next: the agency will publish specifics about ParkMobile availability at the Port and coordinate the Breda retirement events with the public.
