Board approves contract for five Gillig battery-electric buses

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Board on Tuesday approved a contract to buy five 40-foot battery-electric buses from Gillig through a state cooperative purchasing agreement.
Marley Miller, an SFMTA fleet engineer, presented contract SFMTA2025-21-FTA, which she said is federally funded and capped at a not-to-exceed amount of $7.7 million with a term up to five years. Miller said the buses are configured to match the agency's existing battery-electric vehicles and that the per-unit price is about $1.43 million.
Why it matters: The procurement adds another domestic manufacturer to the agency's electric-bus portfolio, which staff said helps diversify supply and improve resilience of future orders. Miller told directors that the buses are part of a 12-bus FT110 project (combining previously approved New Flyer buses and this Gillig order) with total project funding of roughly $30.24 million drawn primarily from FTA grants, RM3 funding and other capital sources.
Board action: After questions about procurement cadence, cooperative purchasing and pilot status, the board moved and seconded the item. The roll call recorded aye votes from Directors Chen, Felder, Henderson and Hinsley; the chair called the item approved.
Next steps: Staff will complete procurement steps, post-delivery testing and integration work and return with any required implementation details and timelines.
