Budget committee forwards DA grants to expand insurance-fraud investigations

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors’ Budget and Finance Committee on Dec. 3 voted to forward two resolutions that would allow the District Attorney’s Office to accept and expand state grants to investigate insurance fraud.
Tina Nunes Ober, managing attorney for the DA’s office economic crimes unit, told the committee the California Department of Insurance awards would support two full-time investigators and 1.35 attorney positions for the workers’ compensation program (about $1.1 million) and about half an attorney plus a half investigator for the automobile insurance fraud program (about $347,000). The funds also pay for training and public outreach intended to reduce fraud-driven increases in premiums, Nunes Ober said.
Supervisor Mahmood asked for trend data and caseload detail; Nunes Ober said the office has seen an uptick in referrals and more complex, multi-defendant cases, and offered to provide specific statistics later. She said the grants do not cover the DA’s full needs but are vital because dedicated investigators help build cases from the ground up, including drafting and executing warrants.
No members of the public spoke on the items. Chair Supervisor Connie Chan moved to forward both resolutions to the full Board with a positive recommendation; the clerk recorded three ayes and the motion passed.
The full Board will consider the resolutions on Dec. 9 unless otherwise scheduled.
