Sarasota County commissioners approved a special exception for a 135‑foot Verizon monopole at 6100 Hawkins Drive by a 3–2 vote following public comment and a petitioner rebuttal.
Neighbors told the board they had limited notice, worried about property values, wildlife and aesthetic impacts, and urged the county to consider alternate county‑owned parcels. James Johnston, the applicant’s attorney, and Verizon RF staff explained that the carrier’s search ring and coverage needs, code separation requirements and landowner willingness constrained site options. Johnston said Verizon and FP&L moved the proposed location to the site’s southwest corner, nearest I‑75 and farthest from residences, and showed radio‑frequency maps demonstrating coverage improvements.
Commissioner Kutsinger argued the substation location along I‑75 was appropriate for infrastructure and moved approval. The motion carried 3–2 with the chair voting no. The county will process required permits and FP&L will own and maintain the pole while Verizon will be the anchor licensee.
