Sarasota commissioners unanimously express confidence in County Administrator Jonathan Lewis

The Sarasota Board of County Commissioners on March 11 voted unanimously to express confidence in County Administrator Jonathan Lewis after a series of comments and social-media posts prompted one commissioner to call for an explicit statement of support.

Commissioner Ron Kutzinger moved the measure, saying Lewis has led the county through the recovery and follow-up to multiple storms and that county departments under his leadership have won awards and maintained a AAA bond rating. Commissioner Maas seconded the motion. Kutzinger cited debris removal totals after storms and said Lewis commands respect across county staff and the community.

Several other commissioners spoke in support. Commissioner Mast said Lewis has built a “culture of excellence,” recalling more than a decade of professional interaction. Commissioner Smith and Commissioner Knight likewise praised Lewis's leadership and institutional experience. Chair called the question and the motion passed with all present voting aye.

Why it matters: County administrators lead execution of policy set by elected officials and manage day-to-day county operations, including storm response and infrastructure projects. A formal vote of support signals to staff and outside partners that the board intends continuity in county management while commissioners continue to scrutinize policy decisions.

What the motion does not do: The unanimous vote was an expression of confidence, not a contractual change or a disciplinary measure. Commissioners repeatedly framed policy decisions as the responsibility of the five-member board, with the administrator responsible for implementation.
