Neighborhoods along Phillippi Creek urge county to dredge after repeated storm flooding

Residents living along Phillippi Creek pressed the Sarasota County Commission on Jan. 15 to fund dredging and restore the creek’s outflow after three successive storms—Debbie, Helene and Milton—left sandbars and silt deposits that community members say repeatedly flooded homes.

Jim McWhorter, who said he has lived on Phillippi Creek for more than 50 years, told the commission that roughly 100 homes along the creek were flooded multiple times during the storm sequence. Retired engineer McWhorter said his calculations indicate the creek’s outflow is roughly 35% blocked and that redredging historic channels could lower storm surge levels for homeowners as far upstream as Bee Ridge Road by as much as four feet.

Several other residents and members of the group SAND (Supporters for Action Now on Dredging) described emergency responses and personal losses. Jacob Crabtree said he had 32 inches of water in his home during one storm and 18 inches during another; Bruce Merkel said he had three floods in two months and lost virtually everything.

Speakers asked the county to prioritize a dredging program and provide funding to restore navigability, protect property values and reduce the public-safety risk posed by repetitive flooding. Commissioners acknowledged the seriousness of the testimony and noted infrastructure and funding constraints; staff indicated that stormwater and infrastructure planning items will be included in upcoming budget and CIP discussions.

Next steps: Residents asked for expedited county analysis and funding; commissioners said the topic will be part of ongoing CIP and stormwater planning discussions.
