City staff told the St. Petersburg City Council on Tuesday that they have begun an extensive monitoring program of properties affected by recent hurricanes to ensure necessary repairs have been permitted and inspected, a process they said is required to remain compliant with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
Joe Wall, director of the city’s codes and permitting team, said damage assessments identified roughly 11,000 properties within the Special Flood Hazard Area and that staff have completed about 4,500 inspections since late January. He said 806 cases have been converted to post‑disaster emergency permit (PDEP) cases, more than 65 violation notices have been issued for work without permits, and 59 cases were closed after permits received final approvals.
