Tree Board: staff reports 2,412 trees planted this year; aquatic center landscaping underway

City staff updated the Wellington Tree Board on ongoing planting and removal activity, reporting 2,412 trees planted this year and ongoing landscaping at the new aquatic center.
Speaker 5 told the board that 2,412 trees were planted this year, of which 298 were funded by grants and about 1,100 were installed with the Garden Club during the public-lands planting. "We did pretty good last year on our plantings," Speaker 5 said, and added that crews were working on native selections and irrigation as part of the second phase of several landscape projects.
Staff also reported several removals of mature oaks (some showing Ganoderma) and other trees that had died or weakened following storms. Speaker 5 said the inventory showed more than 500 public trees lost and that grant applications are being pursued to replace lost canopy.
Board members discussed site-specific issues such as sight-line concerns where plantings grew too tall on medians, whether relocated plants were being reused, and cost comparisons between relocating large palms and planting new material.
Next steps: staff will continue landscaping at the aquatic center, monitor tree removals and replacements, and pursue planting grants; members asked staff to provide additional detail on grant applications and scheduling.
