On Jan. 6 the City of Venice Planning Commission reviewed and recommended approval to City Council of Comprehensive Plan Amendment petition 2573 CP, the annual development data report required by the comprehensive plan. Planning manager Amy Nelson presented neighborhood maps and summary tables that show modest changes in dwelling‑unit counts and nonresidential square footage since the prior report.
The primary substantive change this year was a new Planned Public Hospital (PPH) designation that isolates the hospital site from the surrounding Laurel Road mixed‑use corridor so staff can track hospital‑related development separately. Nelson said the repositioning clarifies the remaining mixed‑use capacity in the corridor and simplifies monitoring of thresholds established in the comprehensive plan.
Staff concluded there is sufficient information on the record for the commission to act. With no public commenters on the item, commissioners voted to recommend the amendment to City Council by a 7–0 vote.
