The Novi Community School District Board of Education on Jan. 8 recognized Novi High teacher Katie James for completing National Board Certification.
Kathleen Ader, who has mentored multiple teachers through the four-component certification process, described the program's five core propositions and four components, noting research that students taught by national board certified teachers tend to perform better, particularly students at risk. Ader outlined the assessment, portfolio entries, teaching-practice video submissions and reflective practice required by the certification.
James told the board she completed the multi-year process in three years and credited fellow teachers and administrators for editorial and instructional support. She said colleagues including Hattie, Megan Chapin Dube, Caitlin West and Bethany Bratney helped her refine portfolio entries and teaching strategies.
The board moved to recognize James with appreciation for her commitment to students and the district; the motion was supported and approved by voice vote (7 to 0). Board members praised her work and noted the district's increasing number of nationally certified teachers as an asset for student outcomes.
The recognition was recorded as an official board motion and the board expressed gratitude for the mentorship program that has helped multiple teachers pursue certification.
