A new Popeyes restaurant proposed for 756 Broadway in Amityville drew board scrutiny on Jan. 7 over signage size, placement and illumination.

Dean Kotsubas, speaking for the applicant, described a new-build restaurant with indoor seating and a drive-through and requested variances that include a ground sign height of 3 feet where the code allows 2 feet 6 inches and multiple wall and logo panels. "The ground signs, we're proposing a height of 3 feet where the code is 2 foot 6," Kotsubas said, and described several thin, non-illuminated logo panels used for branding.

Board members pressed whether all of the logos and signs were necessary, pointed to one large chicken logo that faces a nearby residence and asked the applicant to consider removing some panels. The board also asked for hours of operation and employee counts; the transcript records a proposed hours figure of "10 a.m. to 1 a.m., seven days a week" discussed during the hearing but the applicant agreed to provide definitive hours in writing.

The board closed the hearing but kept the record open to allow the applicant to submit written confirmation on hours, employee numbers, and any sign reductions. Members said written revisions could change the nature of the variances requested.

Next steps: Applicant to provide a written response outlining hours of operation, staffing, and any sign reductions. The board will consider those materials before rendering a decision.
