Newberry County Council on Nov. 20 adopted Resolution No. 92-24 honoring Councilman Leslie Lehi Hipp for his years of service to the county. The resolution, read aloud by the chair, recounted Hipp’s local roots, education and long career, including his work at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station and his leadership on the county’s Economic Development Committee.
Hipp stood to accept the recognition and told colleagues, “I will say thank you to my fellow council members … and I appreciate it immensely.” The resolution notes Hipp’s involvement in recruiting Samsung and its suppliers to Newberry County, citing an investment figure presented in the resolution text and a job estimate tied to that recruitment.
Chairman Johnson offered a tribute to Hipp’s leadership, saying Hipp had “sharpened me and made me better” and wishing him well in retirement. Council members gathered at the podium to present the resolution and posed for a group photograph with Hipp and family members.
Council moved to adopt the resolution (motion by Mr. Hill; second by Mr. Reeder). Mr. Hipp stated he would recuse himself from the vote; the chair recorded the measure as adopted with Mr. Hipp abstaining. The council provided multiple verbal tributes and holiday wishes during the meeting.
