During the meeting Mrs. Polk, who presented the facilities report, told the board that the Department of Environmental Protection visited the building on Dec. 18 to review schools listed in DEP records as very small quantity hazardous-waste generators. She said the school does not generate hazardous waste and that staff submitted a universal waste management plan; Mrs. Polk reported receiving a clear response from DEP and said she will submit paperwork to update DEP records to the name 'Mifflin County Academy of Sciences' and to request removal of the very-small-quantity-generator status.
Polk said vendor documentation — including records from Safety-Kleen — helped show that materials from automotive and related programs were handled as nonhazardous. She explained that an administrative gap emerged after a former maintenance employee managed those contract arrangements and that a Safety-Kleen pickup is scheduled for the following week to complete outstanding disposals.
On maintenance workload, Polk described three overdue maintenance requests (one in the kitchen) and 12 overdue planned maintenance items (four closed after the report; six are routine district annual functions and two were rescheduled to January due to snow). She said the district is continuing capital-planning work, collecting quotes and preparing bids for future facilities projects.
Board members asked clarifying questions during the report; no enforcement action or penalties were reported in the meeting record. The facilities items were provided as informational updates and required no separate motion beyond receipt of the packet materials.
What’s next: Facilities staff will pursue the administrative DEP name update and the BSQG removal request; vendor pickups and planned maintenance scheduling will proceed per the timeline discussed in the packet.
