Polk County commissioners set 2026–27 budget calendar, unanimously approve routine items

The Polk County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 31 unanimously approved routine agenda business and adopted a calendar for the 2026–27 budget cycle.

The board’s chair opened the meeting and, after a brief year-end remark, moved to approve the day’s agenda; the motion passed unanimously. The board then unanimously approved the minutes from Dec. 24 and the consent calendar.

Mister Hanson, who presented the budget calendar to the board, outlined the schedule for public participation and formal actions. “Key dates for the public would be February 11,” Hanson said, referring to the compensation committee meeting that reviews elected-official salaries. Hanson told commissioners an April public hearing will be held for the proposed budget, the board is expected to tentatively approve the budget at that hearing, formal approval is planned for May 20, and June 24 — the last Wednesday in June — is the board’s deadline to adopt the fiscal-year budget for the upcoming year.

On the question of naming a budget officer, Hanson said the board could name an officer at its discretion and declined to recommend himself. The chair offered to take responsibility for placing the appointment before the board.

Mister Hanson moved to approve the presented budget calendar; the chair seconded the motion and the board approved it unanimously.

The chair asked whether an executive session was needed; members answered no and no executive session was held. The meeting concluded after the chair asked for other business and none was offered.
