Buncombe County Board sustains 25 voter challenges based on death reports

At its Jan. 6 meeting the Buncombe County Board of Elections conducted full hearings on 25 challenges brought by Thomas Neubauer, which the board characterized as challenges based on reports of death. The challenger had presented these issues at a preliminary hearing on Dec. 9; staff had prepared research notes and categorized cases by name mismatch, date-of-birth mismatch and date-of-death corroboration.
The board reviewed staff research and heard that many cases involved mismatches between the challenge list and the county database. Staff explained the categories and noted supporting documentation available for some entries; board members discussed using corroborating details such as last-four Social Security digits and local records to verify claims.
After reviewing the materials, the chair asked for a motion to sustain the challenges. The board voted 'aye' and the challenges were sustained. Staff said they would make the adjustments in the voter-registration database and provide the required notices to affected parties.
Following the action the board moved into executive (closed) session to discuss personnel matters as previously noticed on the amended agenda.
