Tipton City Council elected Nathan Crane as council president during its organizational meeting and completed a series of mayoral and council appointments to city boards and committees.
The council proceeded through its annual reorganization on Jan. 1. After nominations, Speaker 3 called for a vote and declared, "Congratulations, Nathan, council president," following the voice vote. The mayor's appointments read into the record included Corey Mahan as city engineer and ADA coordinator; Theresa Kirk to the alcohol board commission; Joanne Burke as the city representative to Area 5 Council on Aging; Matt Quigley remaining as city attorney; Jeff Lutzinger reappointed to the board of zoning appeals; and Andrea Campbell continuing as the school representative. Several maintenance and advisory posts were also filled, including Joe Van Bibber and Rich Valtaw for city building maintenance and Jake Henry and Joe Vandiver for the golf advisory committee.
Council members also made council appointments: Joe Van Nuver was nominated to the health insurance board, Greg Burton was reappointed to the redevelopment commission (RDC), and Dylan Dietrich was appointed to the tree advisory committee. Council discussion noted RDC members must live within city limits and may not serve simultaneously on certain other boards, a restriction that the council said makes finding eligible residents more difficult.
The council reappointed Shelley Powell to the Tipton Public Arts Commission and reinstated Rich (surname as read in meeting) to a cemetery board seat, though one cemetery board vacancy remained. No formal roll-call tallies were announced for these votes; motions were approved by voice.
The appointments complete the council's staffing for several advisory and statutory boards and clarify where vacancies remain, particularly for an RDC seat that requires a city resident who is not serving on disallowed boards. The council indicated it will continue recruiting to fill remaining openings.
