Jonathan Palmer, representing the Yukon Historical Society, presented a schedule for Greene County's 250th commemoration and described outreach to historical societies and stakeholders.
Palmer said core dates are May 17 (Community Patriots Day kickoff in Koksaki), July 3 (a county event in front of the courthouse intended to include a reading of the declaration and a time-capsule activity) and a September capping event at the Mountaintop Historical Society. Palmer said tourism will act as a central clearinghouse for calendar items so residents and organizations have a single place to find programming across the county.
Planners discussed proposals including a bronze plaque for the courthouse using leftover stone from a justice‑center demolition, banner placement over Catskill's Main Street, and a potential essay scholarship for high‑school seniors in participating school districts. Palmer and others cautioned that volunteer capacity, declining membership in local historical societies, and limited federal and state buy‑in have constrained planning compared with past large commemorations.
Palmer said the July 3 event may fall on a first‑Friday night and could include street closures and accommodations for inclement weather. He asked local officials to help publicize events through school and district communications and to suggest educators who might coordinate student participation.
