Representatives from LifeFlight Memorial Hermann presented the organization’s plan to open a helicopter base at the Huntsville airport to expand rapid transport and reduce response times.
Rudy Cabura, program director and chief flight nurse, said the service is a non‑profit operated by Memorial Hermann and described staffing and fleet details: "We do about 4,000 flights a year," Cabura said, and LifeFlight carries significant medical supplies and blood to provide on‑scene stabilization. He described new, more capable aircraft arriving in March and April and said the base would improve access to definitive care for patients in the region.
City and airport staff updated the court on permitting: the FAA raised issues about building elevations and nearby weather stations, and the city is reworking airport elevations and site plans; city staff said the permit review is underway and a groundbreaking ceremony is planned for next Monday, with dirt‑cutting expected within 30 days if approvals proceed.
Commissioners asked about response times and operations; Cabura said standard lift‑off is about seven minutes and typical response around 17 minutes, with operational capabilities for instrument flight rules (IFR) launches from the airport. The court invited members to attend the forthcoming groundbreaking and welcomed the proposed expansion.
