Unidentified Speaker 1 called the Leesburg City Commission to order on Monday, Jan. 5, 2026, and the meeting opened with an invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance.
During the leadership portion of the meeting, Unidentified Speaker 3 nominated Commissioner Berry for the position of mayor for 2026. The nomination was seconded, there were no other nominations, and the nomination was advanced without further contest. Unidentified Speaker 3 then nominated Mike Peterson for vice mayor; that nomination was seconded and commissioners welcomed Peterson to the vice mayor role.
The commission presented a plaque recognizing the 2025 mayor. Unidentified Speaker 4 read the plaque text aloud: "To Alan Reesman in recognition of your leadership and dedicated public service as mayor of the city of Leesburg for 2025 by the city commissioner on 01/05/2026." Commissioners prepared to present the plaque during the meeting.
On appointments, an existing slate of committee and advisory-board assignments was proposed to remain unchanged. Unidentified Speaker 3 moved to accept the slate as presented and the motion was seconded. A roll-call vote was conducted and commissioners recorded affirmative responses for the slate.
The commission then introduced and read a resolution titled, in part, "Resolution of the city commission of the city of Leesburg, appointing residential members to the Leesburg Electric Advisory Board and providing an effective date." Unidentified Speaker 1 moved to approve the resolution and the motion was seconded. The three applicants read into the record were Michael Rankin (unincorporated representative), John Jay Jack (city representative), and Mark Schwartz (Fruitland Park representative). The commission moved and the roll-call vote recorded affirmative votes to approve those applicants.
Commissioners offered brief closing remarks, including holiday greetings and congratulations to a commissioner who welcomed a new granddaughter. The meeting was adjourned after a motion to do so.
What remains on the record: the nomination of Commissioner Berry for mayor and the nomination and confirmation of Mike Peterson for vice mayor, plus the commission's approval of advisory-board reappointments and the resolution appointing three members to the Leesburg Electric Advisory Board. No contested votes or formal roll-call tallies showing dissent were recorded on the transcript provided.
