The Centerville Town Council on Jan. 8 approved two human-resources resolutions intended to codify current practices for employee pay and leave.
Crystal, the town's human-resources officer, explained Resolution 01-2026 adds language clarifying that merit step increases take effect in the next full pay period after an employee's anniversary date. "It's really just putting an extra step of the practice that we're already following into the policy," Crystal said, describing the measure as clarification rather than a new benefit.
Resolution 02-2026 updates the town's leave policy to permit certain unused sick leave to be transferred so it can be used to increase years-of-service credit with the applicable retirement system rather than being paid out at separation. Crystal said that, based on her calculation, the state maximum for transferred sick leave is unlikely to be reached by employees and the change better aligns with retirement-credit practices.
Both resolutions were moved and seconded and adopted by voice vote. Councilmembers praised the updates as staff-friendly clarifications intended to help retain and compensate employees without increasing immediate cash payouts.
The resolutions were adopted as presented and do not require a public hearing.
Next steps: HR staff will update policy documents to reflect the adopted language and implement the administrative steps needed to effect the change.
