The Town of Lewisville council on Jan. 8 unanimously approved Resolution 20-26-003 to add a fourth speed cushion to the Oak Grove traffic-mitigation project, citing safety concerns observed by public works crews.
John Hannah, public works director, told the council the original plan — requested by the homeowners association — included four installations, but staff reduced the plan to three to stay within the per-project budget. During installation on Fairhaven Road, crews determined that the fourth cushion (the second on Fairhaven) was needed because of traffic patterns and speed. “We kind of even felt unsafe while we were doing the work in there because of the way that people use that road,” Hannah said, describing why the extra device is necessary.
Hannah estimated the incremental cost at about $2,076. Finance Director Pam Orel said the town budgeted $22,000 for traffic mitigation; to date $13,001.56 has been spent, leaving a little over $8,800. After the additional cushion, the town would have about $6,000 remaining, which Hannah said could fund two more cushions this fiscal year if needed.
Council Member Fred Franklin moved to approve the resolution; Brady Allen seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
The action amends an earlier traffic mitigation resolution for Oak Grove and directs staff to proceed with the installation. The council did not attach any conditions to the approval. The town manager said there are no larger traffic-mitigation projects currently scheduled for spring that would conflict with the budget use.
The council meeting minutes state the project is intended to slow traffic and improve safety in the neighborhood; the town will schedule installation with its public works crews.
The council adjourned without further action on this item.
