Board discusses monthly self-evaluation and schedule shifts; evaluation tabled to January

During the same Platte County School District #1 work session, board members spent substantial time debating how to conduct board self-evaluation.

Speaker 7 proposed adopting a monthly approach that breaks the board's evaluation into one principle or category per month, modeled on a neighboring district's practice. "Do 1 of these a month," Speaker 7 said, describing a process where the board would work on one evaluation tab each month in a work session and then reflect on implementation at the next regular meeting.

Board members discussed whether the board's self-evaluation should run concurrently with the superintendent evaluation or remain a separate process. Some members expressed concern about perceptions of "navel-gazing," while others emphasized the value of frequent self-reflection and follow-up. The group discussed logistics (an Excel/spreadsheet format, prior Qualtrics usage) and the feasibility of holding work sessions on alternate nights to avoid overlong meetings.

Speaker 1 closed that portion of the conversation by tabling the evaluation details to a January work session: "The board evaluation will be tabled to work session in January," Speaker 1 said, and asked for a small group to be formed to tighten the draft format if the board wants to proceed.

The board also reviewed proposed changes to the annual meeting schedule, including moving the August meeting to avoid back-to-school night and shifting a Glendo meeting from October to September. The work session concluded with instructions to prepare motions for the next formal meeting and the board adjourned.
