The Homewood Board of Zoning Adjustment approved a front‑setback variance for a single‑family addition at 3410 Avalon Road, allowing the homeowner to extend the front plane of their house by roughly 3.5 feet to create a fourth bedroom.
Homeowner Robert Drum told the board that the lot’s curvature and existing layout leave the family — now with three children — limited options to expand. "The only logical place for us to go out is into the front," Drum said, describing the lot as irregular and explaining that rear or side additions would create significant reconfiguration and setback issues.
A surveyor confirmed that if the front property line were straight, the addition would likely fit within the required setback, but the existing curved street alignment pushes the proposed addition beyond the allowable front setback by about 3.5 feet. Board members discussed alternative configurations and whether enclosing a carport or reconfiguring interior space were feasible; the applicants said those options were logistically and financially impractical.
After discussion a motion to approve the variance was made and seconded. The roll call recorded Miss Childs, Mr. Nieves, Mr. Young and Mr. Perkle voting Yes; Miss Hand voted No. The motion carried and the applicant was advised to work with Emily Harris on next procedural steps and the subsequent development‑plan review requirements before construction.
The approval allows the homeowner to move forward with the proposed addition subject to standard permitting and the planning commission’s development‑plan review.
