Beaufort County Parks and Recreation told its advisory board on Jan. 8 that multiple capital-improvement projects are moving into procurement and construction phases, including a bid closing for a multi-field complex and planned groundbreakings for neighborhood facilities.
Parks Director Terry Brown said the bid process for the Buckwalter Recreation Athletic Complex — four new fields plus additional parking — is out and expected to close on the 16th. “That is out the bid, and we're hoping to get that closed,” Brown said. He told the board the county plans to add more parking with the new fields and is considering shuttle options to handle distance between parking and gym areas during events.
Brown said groundbreakings took place recently for the Wesley Phillips site and another is scheduled for Agnes, with staff expecting construction to take about a year from groundbreaking. He also said the Scott Center building refurbishment will go back out to bid on Feb. 9 and that Lynn Brown facility work (electrical and floor improvements) will require short closures during construction.
On Daufuskie Island, Brown said a bid process for a new community center is beginning and staff will request a boat to make regular weekly access feasible for programming and operations; the board discussed whether a motorized boat would be required.
Old Burton Wells field work will use Geo Bond monies to start refurbishments, and staff plan to walk the site soon with the CIP team to scope work. Brown said some projects will be completed in-house while larger items will return to the board as procurement and contracts are firmed up.
No dollar totals were provided at the meeting; Brown said final budget allocations and whether items will come from general fund or capital categories will be provided as procurement progresses. Board members were invited to visit sites and will be briefed as bids close and contracts are awarded.
The advisory board approved the meeting agenda and minutes by voice vote and heard these facility updates during the department-report portion of the session.
