The Edina Public Schools Board voted Jan. 12 to change how international travel proposals are handled and approved seven proposed international trip experiences for the 2027 school year.
The board adopted a procedural change recommended by Jody De Saint Hubert, director of teaching and learning, to shift international travel from individual board approval to a consent agenda item while retaining committee review. De Saint Hubert said the trips will continue to go through the Teaching & Learning committee and will be shared with the full board through regular updates.
"It is important to note that consent items ... still go to teaching and learning board committee for robust discussions and feedback before they do come to the board for any type of action," De Saint Hubert said.
Administrators acknowledged financial and logistical access barriers for families, particularly for a partnered France experience that depends on host families. De Saint Hubert told the board that staff regard the France program as among the most financially accessible but that the district will accommodate students who cannot host or be hosted by working with teachers and families to find alternatives.
Board members voted to approve the process change and then approved seven international proposals for the 2027 school year; staff said five of the proposals are high‑school led, with one Valley View and one Normandale experience. The district reiterated it will continue to consider equity and access when planning and recruiting for travel programs.
