The Edina Public Schools Board on Jan. 12 approved a revision to the district’s fiscal‑year 2026 budget after staff reported higher‑than‑expected enrollment and new grant and state revenues.
Mert Woodard, director of finance and facilities, said enrollment is the largest driver of the adjustment: the district had projected serving 8,670 students but is serving closer to 8,790, generating about $2.8 million in additional general education aid. Woodard said other adjustments — including a hold‑harmless compensatory provision and recognition of state and federal grants — bring the total revenue alignment to roughly $4.46 million.
"The largest driver of our revenue increase ... is due to our enrollment," Woodard told the board, noting the district will recognize additional compensatory aid and unemployment aid reimbursements. Woodard reported the revision adds approximately $1.9 million above the June budget and estimated the district’s unassigned fund balance at about 9.16 percent of expenditures.
Expenditure changes were described as largely accounting and realignment rather than program expansions. Woodard said special‑education costs will increase by about $1 million (a non‑salary shift), and sites will carry forward roughly $600,000 in donations. He also noted an additional $100,000 for building lease costs related to moving the graduation venue and about $155,000 in meal charge write‑offs being handled within the food service fund.
Board members asked for clarification on the statutory operating debt calculation and overall trends; Woodard said the district is trending in a healthier direction compared with prior years and remains above minimum board policy targets. The board approved the revised FY26 budget by voice vote.
