Smyth County Board reelects Charlie Atkins, adopts 2026 schedule and holidays

Charlie Atkins was reappointed chairman of the Smyth County Board of Supervisors during the board’s organizational meeting on Jan. 8, 2026, after a nomination and a second and a unanimous voice vote. The board also approved Mike Sturgent as vice chairman and confirmed 'Sean' to serve as clerk, with deputies named to assist.

The board adopted its proposed 2026 meeting schedule, keeping regular meetings on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month but reducing November and December to a single meeting to accommodate holidays. Members discussed moving packet distribution timing in the rules of procedure from the Friday preceding a meeting to the Monday preceding the meeting; the board approved an amendment to section 4.6 of the rules to reflect that practice.

The board adopted the state holiday schedule with the addition of Good Friday (April 3), after brief discussion about half-day designations for certain holidays. An amendment to the published agenda was added and approved during the meeting. The board approved corrections to the prior meeting minutes (including name and grammar fixes) and carried the motion to approve them with one abstention.

The procedural votes were conducted by voice and recorded as carried unless otherwise noted. No formal roll-call tallies were read into the record for these organizational items. The board concluded the organizational and procedural items and moved on to financial and policy business.

The board is scheduled to hold a retreat Jan. 29 and has other calendar items and community events on its calendar for the coming weeks.
