Willacy County Commissioners Court handled a batch of routine administrative and procurement matters on Jan. 8, approving a shared copier lease, granting permission to open and repair a street for a sewer tap, and reviewing routine financial and operational reports.
Treasurer Raul Cavazos presented a three-year copier lease that would be split across precincts and the commissioner’s office; commissioners approved the lease and directed IT staff to enable department codes so color copy usage can be tracked and billed to each department. The court approved a property owner’s request to cut the street and perform a sewer tap near the Johnson Street and Ninth Street intersection after staff confirmed engineering designs and contractor approvals.
The treasurer noted typographical errors in the quarterly investment report; the court agreed to table that report for correction and return it at the next meeting. The tax office reported improved collections for the comparable period (Dec collections rose from about $1.68M last year to $1.95M this year) and an improved overall collection rate. The monthly jail count and employee time reports were acknowledged. The court recessed into executive session under section 551 for litigation and real estate negotiations and returned to open session; after the session the court moved to take no action on specified items recorded on the agenda.
Next steps: IT to configure copier cost-accounting codes; treasurer to correct and re-submit the quarterly report; staff to place corrected financials and any outstanding items on the next agenda.
