Willacy County sheriff authorized to apply for victim assistance grant

Willacy County Commissioners Court on Jan. 8 authorized the Willacy County Sheriff’s Office to apply for a Victims of Crime direct service grant through the Criminal Justice Division of the Office of the Governor for fiscal year 2026–27 and approved submitting a resolution with the application.
The sheriff described the position as a continuation of a role created in 2021 and said a match is often required (speakers discussed an 80/20 or 75/25 split in prior cycles). The sheriff identified the current incumbent as Letty Guajago and noted she has performed the duties since last year. Commissioners discussed including the match in the county budget if the award is granted and asked that the resolution and final award acceptance return to the court for formal budget action.
Motion to apply and to approve the resolution passed by voice vote. Commissioners instructed staff to coordinate budget reconciliations and to present the formal resolution, if awarded, for acceptance and budget appropriation.
