Council Member Thompson introduced a Parks Commission initiative to bring a soccer field to Chamberlain Park (Heritage Hill) and asked that council provide oversight and liaison support through the Public Relations committee. She described the volunteer-led effort and the desire to help underserved groups access soccer opportunities.
Mayor Hawkins welcomed the collaboration but distinguished council’s liaison/support role from operations, stating administration would continue to run park operations and that council’s role would be to help with outreach and reporting. "But in terms of council getting into the operations of what fields we're gonna operate, I'm not interested in that at all," he said.
Council moved and seconded the motion to assign liaison responsibilities to the Public Relations committee; roll call recorded unanimous aye responses and the committee was assigned to work with administration and report updates back to council.
