District 3 residents urge Newton County to deliver parks and oppose more gas stations

Residents of Newton County's District 3 used the public-comment period on Jan. 6 to press elected officials for parks and a community center and to question zoning or permitting for a new gas station they said is proposed near Brown Bridge and Coral Railroad.
Alaina Sanders said she came to speak despite the topic not being on the agenda and asked the interim commissioner to meet with District 3 residents, noting the community passed a referendum and "we have not heard anything in regards to District 3 and their parks." She said residents fear the county is prioritizing a park for an outside organization rather than community-driven parks in District 3.
Annette Austin, speaking from the West Side community, urged commissioners to plan for new housing and higher youth populations by building family-oriented facilities rather than approving additional gas stations: "Don't even consider not building a community center for District 3," she said.
Commissioners responded that staff are searching for land and that at least one commissioner plans a town hall to engage constituents; Commissioner Cooper said he will organize a town hall to review updates and gather input. The board did not take formal action on land or zoning at this meeting.
