Mary Catherine Bevart, the ARB administrator, briefed the board on outreach from the Fairfax Park Authority: the authority plans to demolish the Dairy Barn complex down to slab while preserving the silos, and the ARB received the update as informational rather than as an action item.
“It's brought to my attention that someone inquired about updates for the Fairfax Park Authority,” Bevart said, explaining the Park Authority intends to remove the barn structures except for silos. Board members asked whether demolition was prompted by safety concerns and whether lack of maintenance and budget constraints had contributed to deterioration.
Several members said the condition of the barns is indicative of wider maintenance shortfalls on county‑owned historic sites and encouraged more formal coordination with the Park Authority and potential private partners to explore alternatives that might preserve historic resources or fund rehabilitation. One member noted that the buildings are roughly 50 years old and lie outside the overlay’s traditional period of significance but said their decay signals broader treatment issues for cultural resources.
The ARB did not vote or issue a formal objection; members requested staff follow up to confirm the Park Authority’s timeline and to explore whether preservation partners or alternative uses (for example, community or garden programming) could be considered before demolition.
