Massapequa Union Free School District held an athletics recognition ceremony at Massapequa High School that honored three championship teams and the staff who support them.
Athletic director Matt McCleese opened the program by thanking the board, central administration and school staff, calling the season "exemplary" and praising the coaches and families who help sustain the district's programs. Coach Ortega introduced the varsity field hockey squad, congratulating the players after they won the Nassau County Class A championship for the fifth consecutive year. "For the fifth year in a row, the Massapequa varsity field hockey team captured the Nassau County class a championship," she said.
The district also recognized its football team for winning the Long Island championship and the Rutgers Cup, a coaches' selection awarded across conferences, and presented the roster and seniors to the audience. Boys volleyball was celebrated after winning the Division 1 New York State championship in dramatic five-set fashion and finishing a perfect 23–0 season; coaches and players received a standing ovation.
Superintendent (speaker 4) and others gave special recognition to Fran Morceri and Donna in the athletics office for coordinating schedules and logistics, and to the students who run the sports-broadcasting club for amplifying school events online. The ceremony concluded with the district inviting volunteers for the Special Olympics event to be hosted locally on 05/02/2026.
The board moved from the recognition ceremony directly into its regular meeting agenda that followed the event.
