Coventry High adds AP ELA for 10th graders, renames 'CPS' classes to 'Fundamentals' and expands CTE offerings

Superintendent Don Cowart presented a package of course adjustments for Coventry High School that the district has added to its course catalog for upcoming registration. Cowart said the district is approving an AP English Language elective designed as a project‑based seminar available to grades 10–12; “I think this might be the first AP course available to tenth graders,” he said, noting this AP course emphasizes research, analysis and a final presentation.
The district will rename classes currently labeled CPS (college prep with support) to “Fundamentals” to avoid confusion about expected rigor and to better signal that the courses focus on building foundational skills rather than full college‑prep pacing.
Cowart also described CTE adjustments: the health careers course will add an EKG technician component to improve students’ workforce competitiveness; a CTE pathway name change to aerospace engineering was proposed to attract students interested in that field; a new honors 'art in math' course will be added; sports medicine will be offered at an honors level aligned to URI course materials; and a new semester‑length wellness course for athletes will focus on mental health, discussion and reflection as well as some physical activity.
Cowart said course availability depends on student registration and that courses with no enrollment will not run. The committee asked clarifying questions about curriculum alignment and the relationship between physical education and health; Cowart replied that phys ed teachers also teach health, and the new wellness elective aligns with both departmental duties and health curricula.
