Summary
Following a recruitment process, Mapleton City Council voted to appoint Clay Hooley, a Spanish Fork Police Department supervisor, as the next Mapleton police chief. The council plans to administer his oath at the next meeting.
Chief Jackson, who announced his retirement in November, briefed the council on the police chief recruitment process and recommended Clay Hooley as the successor. Jackson said the city received both internal and external candidates, interviews were held and finalists were narrowed before a selection was made.
Clay Hooley introduced himself and said he and his family live near Maple Mountain High School; he said serving the Mapleton community and supporting local families motivated his application. "I've been very blessed in the opportunities that I've had to serve as a law enforcement officer," Hooley said. He described a vision to build on the department’s successes and to make public safety "top notch."
Council moved to appoint Hooley by resolution. The motion passed on a roll-call vote recorded as unanimous. Council and staff said they will swear in Chief Hooley at the next council meeting to allow family and regional partners to attend. Chief Jackson and city staff thanked Jackson for his service and said a retirement recognition will be scheduled.
Staff noted there is an open officer position and an active recruitment period; the council said public-safety staffing and training will remain priorities as leadership transitions occur.
