Wausau committee approves no-parking restrictions on several narrow streets

The City of Wausau Infrastructure & Facilities Committee approved a package of parking restrictions on Jan. 8 aimed at improving safety for school buses and winter plowing on narrow streets.
Engineering described several problem locations and recommended restrictions. For the 1600 block of Kickbusch Street, staff said school buses exiting a parking lot have trouble making the turn when cars park on the south side; engineering recommended 75 feet of no parking west of the crosswalk to allow buses to turn. For West Eldridge Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues, Alderman Rasmussen requested no parking on both sides to address the alley-like width; staff said residents have alternate parking on adjacent avenues. For Eldridge Street between Cherry and 1st, staff recommended seasonal no parking from Nov. 1 to Apr. 1, mirroring other narrow streets. Strobridge Street was recommended for south-side seasonal posting to make signs consistent with the corridor. On Greenfield Avenue (Fernwood Drive to Summit Drive), engineering and DPW plow drivers recommended no parking on the north (odd-numbered) side from Nov. 1 to Apr. 1 to improve plow access.
Alder Lisonbee moved to approve the Kickbusch restriction; Alder Martins seconded. Alder Larson moved to approve the West Eldridge restriction; Alder Watson seconded. Alder Larson moved to approve seasonal Eldridge restrictions; Alder Neal seconded. Alder Neal moved to approve Strobridge south-side seasonal posting; Alder Martins seconded. Alder Neal moved to approve Greenfield seasonal posting; Alder Larson seconded. All motions passed with no recorded opposition.
Staff reported resident outreach: staff said letters were sent to affected residents and reported two direct contacts on Greenfield (709 Greenfield supportive, 718 Greenfield supportive by email). One resident suggested special permits for very large gatherings (a suggestion staff said it would pass along to the committee).
Next steps: staff will implement signage and update parking maps and will coordinate with DPW for plowing and enforcement schedules.
