Committee reviews student-teacher ratio data as consolidation and staffing plans proceed

District staff presented detailed staffing data and comparables to the committee, showing 388.79 full-time-equivalent teachers and a September student count of 4,344 — a ratio the presenter calculated as about 11.7 students per teacher districtwide.

"We are sitting at right now 11.7 students per teacher," Nate said while reviewing the Skyward data. Staff said the district's ratio is generally lower than chosen peer districts, and that the district has relatively high average salary cost per student, a function of both pay scale and a lower student-teacher ratio.

Committee members raised questions about special education, which requires smaller classroom sizes and therefore affects the average ratio. One member asked how much of the low ratio was driven by special education enrollments; staff confirmed special education classrooms and students with IEPs are included in the reported figures and said the district's share of students with IEPs is above peers and does influence staffing calculations.

Board members discussed trade-offs between a districtwide target ratio and classroom-level impacts, noting that raising the overall ratio could lead to very large general-education classes in some secondary courses. "I like to see how those numbers play together," one member said, referring to the interaction between overall ratio targets and class-size distribution.

Staff said the data will inform staffing recommendations and that more granular information (by grade and program) will accompany any staffing proposals brought to the board. The committee did not take a formal vote on ratio targets; members requested that staff include detailed breakdowns (special education, program-specific counts) when making formal staffing proposals.
