St. Mary Parish School Board moves regular meeting to first Thursday; approves bus discipline matrix and schedules committee meetings

The St. Mary Parish School Board voted on Jan. 8 to move its regular monthly meeting from the second Thursday to the first Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. Miss LaSalle made the motion, Miss Brent seconded, and the motion carried by voice vote. Legal counsel noted the change will require updates to several district policies that currently list meeting dates and times.
During business affairs, counsel explained some outside-law firm scheduling conflicts prompted the proposal; board members discussed attorney coverage and noted a desire to keep existing counsel where possible. A public commenter asked whether legal counsel was available on the proposed date; counsel confirmed availability for the first-Thursday date.
The board approved recommended revisions to the student bus transportation discipline matrix from the discipline committee. Doctor Wilson moved to accept the committee's recommendation and Miss LaSalle seconded. Bus operator Grant Guillory Doman thanked the committee, saying the matrix will improve safety and the working environment for drivers.
Committee scheduling and facility items were also discussed: Mister Mancuso set a policy committee meeting for Jan. 21 at 4:00 p.m. to review policies from the consent agenda and any affected by the meeting-date change. District 1 members scheduled a maintenance committee meeting for Feb. 5 at 5:00 p.m., immediately before the adjusted regular meeting on Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m., to discuss Centerville High School baseball lighting.
Financial updates delivered during the meeting included a group health-insurance report from Mister Perez: total claims for the 2025 plan year were reported at $11,200,000, with a simple loss ratio of 85.7% and an adjusted loss ratio of 91.3% after a large-claim adjustment of $356,932; the renewal negotiated to a 2.5% increase. CFO Miss Boisette reported sales-tax collections (July–December) were 1% ($113,000) unfavorable year to date but that December collections of $3,200,000 were $827,000 over the monthly budget; the IRS mileage rate will rise from $0.70 to $0.725 per mile and transitional forms are posted online.
