The Sunnyside City Council voted to accept a Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) award from the Washington State Department of Health totaling $741,000 to address issues at city wells. City staff said Well 7 has already been repaired and the funds will primarily be used to refurbish Well 6. The award carries a 1.75% interest rate and staff stated the package includes a forgiveness/grant portion equal to roughly 35% of the award (approximately $230,000).
City manager and public-works staff said they received required documents from state agencies and, following council authorization, the interim city manager will sign the agreements so procurement and repairs can begin. The payback schedule for the loan will be provided to council when available.
Why it matters: repairing municipal wells preserves drinking-water reliability and protects public health. The combination of loan and partial forgiveness reduces the net cost to the city.
What’s next: city staff will return to council with a repayment schedule and proceed with procurement for the Well 6 work after documents are executed.
