Governor Healy said it recently came to the administration's attention that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was using Hanscom Airport to transport people detained by ICE out of the state and said she has asked the Department of Homeland Security and private airlines to stop the practice.
"It came to our attention that ICE was using Hanscom Airport to fly people who had been detained by ICE out of the state," Healy said. She said the administration had followed up with the DHS secretary and with private airlines and that the state had concerns about instances in which people, including U.S. citizens, were taken "without due process and access to counsel." She said video of recent events was available and that an investigation would follow.
Healy framed the issue as a question of public safety and due process, saying the state's priority is protecting residents and communities. "I do not want ICE to continue to fly and use an airport in Massachusetts to engage in conduct that violates people's due process rights," she said, and called on private carriers "to get out of the business of continuing to work with an agency that time and time again shows that it's full of people who are not trained, not competent, cruel, and callous."
The governor said she has asked for investigations and stressed the need for ICE to operate lawfully; she did not provide details about specific flights, carriers or pending enforcement actions. State officials said they would follow up with further details as available.
