The Coconut Creek City Commission on Jan. 8 approved Resolution 2026-006 adopting the city's 2026 state legislative agenda, after the commission amended wording on certain fiscal-impact items from "oppose" to "monitor."
Bernadette Hughes and staff presented the streamlined agenda, developed with the city's lobbyists and staff to focus on specific bills and priority appropriation requests. Staff said the city will emphasize in-person advocacy during Broward Days and that staff and the lobbyists will monitor bills as they emerge during the legislative session.
The binder includes five appropriation requests that staff will forward to Representative Honchofsky and Senator Polsky for advocacy in Tallahassee. Staff listed those requests as focused on stormwater improvements, wastewater improvements, government center courtyard renovation, recreational facility repairs and the Northeast Utilities expansion. The commission or staff noted total appropriations requested equal $2,240,000.
During discussion, commissioners debated whether taking an explicit "oppose" position on certain property-tax or nonprofit-related bills could create political fodder in Tallahassee. Commissioner Rydell argued some language might strengthen opponents' narratives and proposed changing fiscal-impact items to "monitor" rather than outright "oppose." Commissioner Rydell moved the amendment and Vice mayor Wasserman seconded; the commission approved the amendment by roll call and then unanimously approved the final legislative agenda with that change.
Staff said the packet represents a snapshot and that bills continue to be filed; staff will provide updates and track bills and appropriations throughout the session. Commissioners will be able to request letters or take positions as specific bills arise during committee weeks and Broward Days outreach.
