Commissioners approve weights-and-measures fee increase to restore program balance

The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners adopted Resolution 2026-1, approving increases to weights-and-measures registration fees that staff said have not been updated since 2016.
John Bednar presented charts showing the program’s expenses have risen—driven by salary and benefit increases and other costs—while fee revenue grew more slowly. He said the program’s balance would fall to about $20,000 in 2026 if fees stayed at current levels and that the proposed adjustments would restore a roughly $79,000 balance under his projections.
Commissioners asked about the percentage change and agreed to monitor fees on a more regular schedule. One commissioner suggested marking calendar dates to review fees more frequently than historically. After discussion, a motion to adopt the resolution was moved, seconded and approved by the board.
The fee changes take effect under the adopted resolution and county staff said they would revisit fee schedules periodically to avoid long gaps between updates.
