Commission advances Needham Trails signage plan and schedules public owl program

Commission staff updated the Needham Conservation Commission on the Needham Trails signage initiative and upcoming public programs at the Jan. 8 meeting. Staff reported that an owl prowl public program at Ridge Hill filled within 24 hours and that a follow‑up event at the Town Forest is being planned. The commission reviewed draft trail maps and discussed standardizing trail names, colors, and loop designations for kiosk signs to make routes easier for the public to follow.
Staff said the town GIS administrator will produce refined maps once the commission agrees on trail names and colors; Ridge Hill was identified as the first site to pilot the new sign and map format because it is solely under the commission’s jurisdiction. Commissioners asked staff to circulate the draft maps and to return with recommendations at a future meeting so fabrication can be scheduled for spring.
The commission agreed to continue work on the signage project and to provide input by email ahead of the next meeting.
