Director Brian Gruner presented monthly updates to the Parks and Community Services Commission on Jan. 8, highlighting senior-center activities, adult basketball, youth programs and park volunteer efforts.
Gruner reported successful senior-center events including Thanksgiving lunch and breakfast with Santa, and described regularly offered activities such as card club and pool. He summarized adult basketball (eight teams; nearly 100 players) and youth offerings: collaborative free swim lessons with the Unified School District (about 35 participants in the most recent session), dodgeball with police officers (about 50 participants), the LEAP holiday party (about 27 attendees), and winter camp sessions that were nearly sold out (46'0/50 kids per week). Gruner also noted the BFit pickleball and basketball programs and said Snoopy House drew nearly 1,000 attendees on one night.
On parks, Gruner described growing volunteer participation at Ferry Park and restoration days (Fairview Fridays, native-gardening mornings and weekend restoration days) and encouraged community involvement. He reminded commissioners the Brentwood Park groundbreaking is scheduled for the following day at 3 p.m. and promoted the All Abilities Resource Fair on Feb. 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about the senior-center mental-health service (Gruner said it is available year-round when the center is open) and praised coordinated swim-lesson efforts with partner agencies. No formal actions were taken on the program reports.
