Sun City West’s governing board kicked off a community-wide master-plan effort on Jan. 9, welcoming consultant Jason Genk of BerryDunn to outline a nine-month process built around facility assessments, data analysis and broad resident engagement. President Christine Novello opened the workshop and established quorum before turning the meeting to the consultants.
“This planning effort is all about you and all about the community,” Genk told directors and residents, describing a tailored approach that draws on design, golf‑course analytics and survey research. He said the team will be on site next week for facility tours and pop‑up events and expects to deliver a final plan in September.
The consultant described engagement tools that include an interactive website, open‑house events and on‑site pop‑ups intended to reach both active club members and less engaged residents. Genk listed launch events for the coming week: a community drop‑in Wednesday from 1–2 p.m., an open house Thursday 5–7 p.m., and a coffee drop‑in Friday 8–9 a.m., with a dedicated landing page (masterplan.suncitywest.com) to go live at launch.
Directors pressed the team about outreach to clubs and committees; Director Pajkowski suggested distributing the event link through club newsletters and mailings. Genk and staff said they will coordinate distribution lists and post specifics on the association website and in community posters.
Residents at the meeting urged the consultant to consider issues that affect livability beyond the association’s direct control—traffic, regional development and walkability—while staff and the consultant said the master plan will focus on Sun City West facilities and amenities but will document and monitor regional issues for advocacy through partners such as PORA and the Maricopa Association of Governments.
The board did not take any votes on the substantive content of the plan at the workshop; directors asked staff to provide monthly briefings on master‑plan progress and to bring a proposed governance mechanism for board oversight to the next regular meeting.
