Assembly member Amanda Septimo, who represents the Bronx’s 84th District, hosted an inaugural holiday toy-and-resources giveaway at her district office on 148th Street and Brook Avenue on Dec. 24, providing toys, food, books and refreshments to visiting families.
Organizers said the event was set up as a walk-in resource for families facing a costly holiday season. An on-site speaker said, “We’re certainly at hundreds at this point,” describing turnout that volunteers said reflected sizable local need. Local educational partners distributed books and school supplies alongside toys and refreshments, and the event included a visit from Santa.
Septimo’s office described literacy as a goal for the event, with organizers noting they want children to have access to books and to follow their development over time. Organizers told attendees they hope to make the giveaway an annual tradition with a larger number of toys next year so “every Bronx child and family can have themselves a Holly Jolly Christmas.”
Attendees reacted with gratitude and relief. One parent said, “It’s all about the kids,” and another attendee said they were happy for their child — remarks volunteers cited to illustrate the event’s immediate impact.
Chris Cumella of BronxNet Community Television reported from Brook Avenue. The event was presented as an inaugural community outreach effort by Septimo’s office; organizers said they plan to expand the distribution in future years.
