Council honors retiring staff, makes committee appointments and praises Fire Rescue

Greenville City Council on Jan. 8 recognized long‑serving city employees, approved several internal committee appointments and heard a city manager report praising Fire Rescue’s response to a large warehouse fire.

The city manager introduced Jennifer Mills of the Public Works Department, who retired after 33½ years of service; colleagues described her role in customer service and cemetery matters. The council also recognized Master Police Officer Monterosa for more than two decades of service, including work as a school resource officer and on special operations. (The transcript contains inconsistent renderings of his name — both "Philip Monterosa" and "Felix Monterosa" appear — the council’s remarks identify him as the retiring officer.)

During the appointments portion the council voted to fill three seats on the Audit & Investment Committee (Mayor Pro Tem Tanya Foreman, Council member Scully, Council member Willis), two seats on the Joint Pay & Benefits Committee and a seat on the Taxicab Appeal Board (Council member Jones). Motions to appoint carried by voice vote.

In his report, the city manager detailed Greenville Fire Rescue’s response on Dec. 28 to a large warehouse fire on the 300 block of Martin Street. He said crews worked more than 35 hours to contain the blaze in an approximately 125,000‑square‑foot warehouse, prevented the fire from spreading to an adjacent warehouse and were assisted by neighboring departments and a tanker task force.

Council members offered congratulations to the retirees and praise for first responders. The council adjourned at the end of its agenda.
