Summary
Special projects coordinator Mark Hughes told the board FreshStart Academy and related programs helped at-risk students recover credits, enabled four juniors to graduate last year, and provides adult diplomas and online instruction for students with medical needs.
Mark Hughes, the district’s special projects coordinator, briefed the board Dec. 18 on FreshStart Academy and the district’s alternative-education services, highlighting outcomes used to reduce dropout risk.
Hughes said the program serves expelled students and students from other districts, provides an adult education diploma program at no cost to qualified residents and supports long-term online education for students with medical needs. He described individualized instructional alignment with students’ home schools so returning students do not fall behind.
Hughes told trustees that four at-risk juniors who joined FreshStart last year completed enough coursework to graduate with high school diplomas. The district is beginning a parent-and-student mentoring program in January and a mentoring partnership with Reverend Jones to support alternative-school students. Hughes also described a 'Bridal Academy' credit-acceleration program aimed at middle-school students to help them catch up academically.
Board members thanked Hughes and noted the board previously approved bridge programming that has aided students’ progress. Hughes invited board members and staff to visit FreshStart Academy for more information and follow-up.
